My loves!! I have so much to tell you in this post.
This was honestly one of the best weekends so far in college, and certainly one of the most memorable. My mom came to visit from Saturday to Sunday for parents weekend, so that was super fun, but I also had a wonderful night on Friday with a mysterious person we shall call MB for the purposes of this post. 😉
Friday
After a Whole Foods trip with Roomie, I did my laundry, interviewed a political journalist as part of my Journalism profile assignment, and did this kickboxing workout followed up with this back workout; totally killer!
So in the evening, I had dinner at Dean and Deluca with a couple friends– had my fave turkey avocado sandwich on rye.
And then MB and I embarked on our adventure to see the DC monuments at night, which by the way is something that’s basically a must for every Hoya at some point throughout their 4 years on the Hilltop.
So we started with the Korean War Veterans Memorial, which was haunting and eerily beautiful at night.
Then a quick stop at the MLK memorial.
Then FDR! (Love the pooch!)
DC has a lot of beautiful memorials, as you can tell. :p MB is a history buff so I was learning a lot too!
And then we walked quite a long way to the Thomas Jefferson memorial, which sits separately from the National Mall, across the Tidal Basin, so it’s a pretty spectacular view across the water. Sitting on those steps and looking out at that view kind of made the whole going to DC for college thing totally worth it. It really is a beautiful city.
And then we ended the night with the Lincoln Memorial, another gorgeous amphitheater type structure with phenomenal views, on account of it being quite high up. It was freezing but we spent quite a while just sitting and enjoying the views and the night.
Saturday
My mom came in at around 12:30pm on Saturday. It took her a while to kind of settle in and check out my room and all that, so we ended up getting a very late brunch at one of my favorite Georgetown spots Peacock Cafe.
I went with the Peacock Omelet, and she got the Salmon Eggs Benedict. And so much coffee.
Mom and I basically girl-talked the ENTIRE time there, probably providing a lot of interesting listening material to all the patrons sitting nearby LOL. After about 2 hours, we embarked on our long walk to the National Cathedral. Of course I didn’t realize the cathedral closed at 4:30, and by the time we got there it was about 5pm. Which actually turned out totally fine because the Bishop Gardens were open, and those were absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Definitely one of my favorite spots in DC now.
Mom and I found a seat amidst the roses and talked for another couple hours about anything and everything. It’s been a while since we’ve bonded so much, and I feel like both of us just had so much to tell the other.
And then we got back into Georgetown and went to &Pizza, where we split a Moonstruck pie (that had mushroom truffle sauce, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, goat cheese, mozzarella, and a fig balsamic sauce.) Absolutely DELISH.
We decided to split one pie because we knew we wanted to save room for the main event.
Thomas Sweet ice cream of course!
I went with Tiramisu and Chocolate Oreo Marshmallow, and Mom got Pistachio and Butter Pecan. This ice cream is seriously NEXT LEVEL.
It’s homemade on premises, and there are literally about 20 flavors to choose from.
So glad my mom got to experience it!
And then we came back to my room (my mom decided to stay with me in lieu of getting a hotel because prices were OFF THE CHARTS for this weekend), and I had the supremely odd experience of experiencing dorm life with my mother. She showered in the communal shower, got ready in the communal bathroom, and generally just experienced life the way I do here. We were both exhausted, so an early bedtime was in order!
Sunday
My mom and I got off to a very lazy start because both of us just didn’t want to get out of bed. By the time we finally got ready and left, we were both super ready for breakfast. I wanted to take her to South Block for acai bowls and then just eat those on the waterfront because the weather was absolutely stellar.
I got myself the new Nutella bowl (so indulgent and amazing), and my mom got the Warrior Bowl. I also grabbed an iced almond milk latte (I think that’s my new jam), and we grabbed a table in front of the Potomac River. We sat there for the next hour and a half talking and bonding some more, and then we sort of lost track of time and had to rush back so she could catch her bus home. And that was our weekend together!
Afterward, I just did some homework, did this yoga video and this one for a bit of low-impact activity (surprisingly challenging on the arms actually!), wrote this post, and then met up with some friends for dinner. They ordered from Curry and Pie, and I’d gotten a Sweetgreen salad earlier, so I just ate that there.
And that was that! I hope you all had an absolutely wonderful weekend; let me know some highlights in the comments! <3

Mom visits once you’ve moved away to college are SO WONDERFUL. My relationship with my Mom started taking on a whole new turn once she started visiting ME, in MY territory. And seeing her outside her usual surroundings was always so cool/weird. We learned so much about each other. Bonded like we never did before. And just all around got to a whole new level of friendship. It is something I will always treasure. I hope there are lots more of these weekends for you both!!

Yes, exactly!! I found that we connected in a whole new way, and there was a new feeling of trust and…equality, I guess? Thanks for commenting, Cora!

I’m with Cora–it’s totally different when mom comes to visit me.
Sounds like an awesome night with MB. I’ve never been to DC, but it would be really cool to see those monuments in person.

Hello, Nicole.
Brunch is probably the second best thing in the world next to coffee. Hee. It was my first time seeing the National Cathedral in pictures. It is so stunning. I’ll definitely visit there soon. Have a fun week!
